Tam Van Nguyen, CMAA's Financial Literacy Instructor, has helped hundreds of Vietnamese businesses get started in Chicago. This used to be his paid job. It isn’t anymore, but people in the community still go to him for help.
Nguyen says the license forms are pretty simple. The problem is that they’re in English. In fact, the only foreign language that the city offers the forms in, is Spanish. So Nguyen helps Vietnamese entrepreneurs fill the forms out in English, and then he has to coach them on what to do when they bring them to the city.
The Citizenship and Education Departments took students on a year end field trip to Cantigny Gardens on Tuesday June 28th.
Cantigny Gardens is located in Wheaton, IL. The 500 acre park includes formal gardens, two museums, a golf course, a hiking trail, and camp grounds.
The trip was offered as a reward to the students for all their hard work during the year on their studies. Attendees also enjoyed a buffet lunch.

Last night's CMAA Family Literacy Club event featured a visit from Asian Human Services to talk to the parents and children about tobacco control. The speakers helped the children to learn the dangers and health problems related to smoking. They were taught how smoking causes lung cancer. That it makes their clothes and home smell bad as well as bad breath. A worksheet activity followed the discussion that the children really enjoyed.
